Listening to its most dedicated fans on the official forums, the team struck a balance between what was most wanted, and of course, the time and budget available. In fact, many things in this expansion reflect BioWare's attention to the community.

This is something the community has been able to do via fan-created software the official in-game version, while not as powerful, represents a much asked-for feature.
There is also a new customize character option which allows you to change the portrait, the look of your character, its voice set, and perhaps more importantly its name, age and biography. You step through a sequence of choices such as gender, race, class and so on, with the opportunity on each page to hit a button that and use BioWare's recommendations. Should you prefer to create an avatar from scratch, the process is the same as the original game.
If you are continuing with any character of less than level 15, the game gives you the choice via the in-game conversation menu to level up automatically or to do so manually, making all the appropriate advancement decisions individually. One of the most anticipated features of this expansion is the raising of the level cap from 20 to a combined class level of 40 using the new D&D 3rd Edition Epic ruleset created by Wizards of the Coast. The call has gone out for a hero brave enough to venture into the depths to fight them on their own turf. All was in balance until recently when the titular hordes somehow reached the surface and started killing everything in sight. They live beneath, in a place called the Underdark, and are led by an evil Queen who goes by the name Valsharess. It explains that under the community lies the deadly Undermountain, created by the sorcerer Halaster, which not only keeps those above ground from getting far in its maze-like passages, but also holds back an even deadlier group of creatures from getting to the surface.

YES NO Hordes of the Underdark kicks off with an introductory movie that uses a combination of still and animated duo-tone art to tell the tale of Waterdeep, one of the grandest cities in the Forgotten Realms. These are available in this section of Neverwinter Vault. BioWare did not fill in this gap, instead supporting a community contest that produced 11 modules to span it. While Hordes takes place some time after Shadows of Undrentide, it isn't necessary to have played the latter a newcomer can easily jump in and know what's going on. The official campaign is a single-player module, and while the game won't stop you from trying it online as a multiplayer module, that isn't what it was designed for, so don't expect to get very far.

If you don't happen to own it already, you may want to check out the Neverwinter Nights Gold Edition, which includes the original plus the first expansion. As you'd expect, the original game is required. Providing content aimed at significantly higher-level characters than its predecessor, the new title shipped at the beginning of December.
As a few highlights, its team has communicated with and supported the player base virtually every day, created the freely available Witch's Wake content, and collaborated with FloodGate Entertainment on the Shadows of Undrentide expansion pack that shipped this summer.Īs if that weren't enough, the studio was also busy putting together a second add-on Hordes of the Underdark. Developer BioWare hasn't been sitting idle either. Its enthusiastic, talented members have produced literally thousands of modules along with even more thousands of in-game modifications that may be used as custom content. To say that the community has flourished seems almost an understatement. As we've seen regularly on RPG Vault and daily at Neverwinter Vault, a tremendous amount has happened during that time. It's hard to believe that, as of last week, 18 months have passed since the release of Neverwinter Nights.
